An alternative to the synthetic target is to use the Bochs emulator:
http://bochs.sourceforge.net
I've used this a lot for PC development. Although it executes code a
lot slower than a real PC, it reboots a lot faster and with the GDB
feature enabled allows non-intrusive debugging.
