cross-ld problem?

Hi.
Did anyone successfully build a new cross loader from the 102400 drop? I built mine with --target=ia64-linux and the resulting linker aborts with
short data segment overflowed (0xfffxxxxx >= 0x400000)
no matter what I am linking...

-V says it is
GNU ld version 2.9-ia64-000717 (with BFD 2.9-ia64-000717)
  Supported emulations:
    elf64-ia64

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.
