Subject: AUTOMAKE: version numbering scheme?

Hello,
Is there any document describing AUTOMAKE version numbering scheme?

I'm asking about this, because i'm looking for some guideline of version
numbering for my small projects. I've already asked FSF - and got the short
answer, that different GNU software uses it's own scheme...
