Ah: 

configure:1553: found /usr/bin/perl
configure:1565: result: /usr/bin/perl
configure:1588: cd conftest && eval ${SHELL} /usr/src/local/automake/lib/missing
 --run autoconf -o /dev/null conftest.ac
Segmentation fault - core dumped


now finding out why...
