I have no idea why this might happen, sorry.
You'd probably have to ask on the dejagnu list.

I thought more recent versions of autoconf don't require dejagnu for
testing.  Anyway, running `make check' is really optional.  At least
for automake, a test failure usually indicates a bug in the test, and
not in automake itself.
