The automake.info doc states in "Optional"
| `AM_MAINTAINER_MODE'
| ... This macro is disallowed in `Gnits' ...
But the current automake allows this macro in gnits mode, this restriction is not mentioned in the 'Gnits' chapter and I do not see any reason why it should be disallowed there (I even think it should be on by default).
Because of the mismatch between actual and documented behavior, one of them shall be corrected.
